Jalon / Xalo and the Local Area

10 minutes drive down the valley is the local town of Jalon, or Xalo with its blue glazed terracotta dome above the main square visible for miles around. It is the principal town in the Val de Pop, a traditional agricultural area famous for growing wine, almonds and olives. Surrounding the valley are some dramatic mountains, some bigger that you will find in England and Wales, giving plenty of scope for walking and anyone wanting to find panoramic views down to the sea. Terrace walls built by the Moors characterise the landscape across the whole area.

Jalon is the Spanish, or Castilian name for the town and Xalo is its Valencian name, reflecting difference between the local Valencian language which is a dialect of Catalan and mainstream Spanish. Jalon is an interesting town with a strong identity and a selection of restaurants, café bars, artesian shops, narrow streets and a local market. Away from the coast, the town retains much of its authentic feel but also manages to cater well for visitors, so problems with language and finding the basics for children should not be of concern. Spanish towns provide play areas for children, and there are 2 main areas in Jalon where kids can enjoy purpose built climbing frames and swings, Plaza Las Ocas and next to the riverbed.
